DSA: Commission designates WhatsApp as a very large online platform

On 26 January, the European Commission designated WhatsApp as a very large online platform under the Digital Services Act (DSA) for its ‘Channels’ feature.

WhatsApp Channels, which allows information to be disseminated to a large number of WhatsApp users, has at least 45 million active users in the European Union.

The platform therefore meets the threshold to be designated as a Very Large Online Platform (VLOP).

Meta now has four months to ensure that its WhatsApp platform complies with the additional DSA obligations applicable to VLOPs.
