Competition
Competition law contributes to the proper functioning of markets by guaranteeing free market competition. On a competitive market, undertakings are encouraged to innovate on an ongoing basis, so they can offer consumers the best products and services possible at the most favourable prices.
The Competition Authority is responsible, in particular, for ensuring that undertakings respect free market competition and it has the power to sanction anti-competitive behaviour, such as abuse of a dominant position or agreements between undertakings.
Within this context the Authority:
- carries out analysis and advisory activities (opinions and sector inquiries);
- investigates and sanctions anti-competitive practices;
- performs certain merger control activities by referring cases to the European Commission;
- represents Luxembourg within the European Competition Network; and
- engages in other cooperation activities at European and international level.
